PowerPoint in the Classroom

Resources for learning about Power Point

If you need more information about how to make PowerPoint presentations, check out these online resources.

http://www.educationworld.com/a_tech/tutorials/ew_ppt.htm

Rubrics for scoring student PowerPoints

If you assign PowerPoints to students, try using a rubric to evaluate the final products. Giving students the rubric ahead of time provides guidance as they work.

PowerPoint in Math

Visual Problem of the Week- Make the POW come alive by including pictures relevant to the problem. Can be a way to support ESL students.

Many Uses, One Program

*** When getting students to create a PPT, have them draft/plan beforehand on paper (storyboard).  This keeps them focused and makes time on the computer more productive.  They don't need to write the text, but plan titles and links and content.  It can be as simple as a folded piece of paper, with one box for each slide. You can also provide a structure for students to follow- tell students what needs to be on each slide.***

Social Studies

Create interactive calendars for a topic- For more info http://www.microsoft.com/education/aroundtheworld.mspx  (Template below)

  • Important dates in California History, with links to more information
  • Birthdays of important historical figures (such as Revolutionary War icons, World War II figures, etc.) with links to more information, and dates related to the topic

Create a timeline of a person's life in a calendar

  • Biographies of historic figures

Create an interactive map (Template below)

  • 3rd grade- map of the city/town, showing important places like the school, library, grocery store, fire station.
  • 4th grade-map of California Missions, with each mission linked to a slide with information about it
  • Intermediate- map of explorers' routes with markers on significant locations
  • Map of historical locations with significant locations linked to more information (WWI, Civil War, Civil Rights movement)

Reports- Here's an outline for a country report presentation- it could be adapted for states or regions- it's fairly detailed and could be a good first project to get kids started using PPT

Create a subject alphabet book (Template below)

  • Each student can submit one letter or students can be responsible for creating their own alphabet for the topic
  • Can be adapted for different grade levels- primary can be responsible for choosing a word and using it in one sentence; intermediate and up can be responsible for  writing a paragraph defining the word and/or explaining its releveance to the topic
  • To model for middle through high school, use G is for Googol or Q is for Quark by David Schwartz.
  • To model for intermediate, use G is for Golden: A California Alphabet by David Domeniconi or A is for America by Devin Scillian.

Science

Labeling diagrams and linking for non-linear PPT

  • Cycles- rock, life, photosynthesis, water...
  • Diagrams- cells, plants, body systems...
  • Charts and Tables- the Mohs Scale of Hardness, the Periodic Table (modeled after this online version: http://www.chemicool.com/)...

Periodic Table.ppt

Create a subject alphabet book (Template below)

  • Each student can submit one letter or students can be responsible for creating their own alphabet for the topic

Language Arts

Choose your own adventure story

Create a timeline of a person's life in a calendar

  • Autobiographies at beginning of year

Create a story map (Template below)

Graphic Organizers that work well in PowerPoint- these can be a way for students to show their understanding of the story or book.  They are traditional activities, but may be more engaging for students when they can add a little extra flare, such as having the problem appear on the page first, then use an interesting effect to bring in the solution.

  • Cause and Effect or Problem and Solution

Create a class Big Book

  • Use a story that follows a template, and each student can contribute a page
  • Students may use clip art to illustrate the page, or use a drawing program to illustrate
  • Examples
    • Things that are MOST in the World by Judi Barrett (great for hyperbole)
    • If... by Sarah Perry (imaginative thinking)
  • "Book" can be projected and read as a class because everyone can see it (and later posted on a class wiki for parents to see!)

Create a patterned book

  • Patterned stories are great in PowerPoint because you can use animations to emphasize the pattern
  • Example books
    • Fortunately by Remy Charlip
    • That's Good! That's Bad! by Margery Cuyler
    • My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman
